Litter

22 April 2016

Litter continues to be an issue in many areas. The council does not seem to take the issue very seriously. In response to our question at Full Council in July 2014, regarding the number of fines for littering that had been issued in the previous year, the Labour portfolio holder replied that there had been just ‘one fine in the previous 12 months’ but also ‘If residents cannot be bothered to use a bin, then it is not our responsibility to police them’. The response to a follow up question in July 2015 did not show much improvement. We believe there needs to be a combination of education and enforcement. We believe that if people thought that there was fair chance of a fine, they would be far less likely to litter. Money spent on enforcement officers would soon be re-cooped by reductions in costs for clearing litter.

When we have spoken to North Warwickshire and Hinckley College (NWHC) regarding littering around the entrance on Hinckley Road, they have spoken to students and there have been temporary improvements but they are not sustained.

We will continue to arrange and/or support any community Litter pick initiatives, as well as encouraging the council to take the matter seriously.

We asked a question again at Full Council on April 13th 1016 . There have still not been any fines. See the newspaper article here.
